mostly, i hate when people think i'm one of those girls who “know” baseball. the ones that ask bottle blonde questions that make others roll their eyes. to prove my worth, i usually just say who plays where, what their number is, and maybe a fun fact. ie. mark teixeira plays first base, number 25, and he currently holds the record for most games with a home run on both sides of the plate. {also my mom's fave}
once mariano rivera announced his retirement to press last year (wait, i was at that game...), i was feeling upset. “the core four” was become the dynamic duo (again) with derek jeter and andy pettitte left.
for those who don't (bother to care) know, “the core four” are derek jeter, mariano rivera, andy pettitte, and jorge posada and have all played on the yankees together since 1995.
they are such a big deal to me because i have been growing up watching these four since i have been alive. i like to say i was named after pettitte because the day i was born, he was on the mound against another andy. buuuuut that's not true. he was on the houston astros from 2004-2006, but came back to us in 2007. :) i mentioned dynamic duo (again) and the top, because he retired in 2010, but came back in 2012. at the end of last season, he made the announcement he was retiring and pitched his last game in houston. {kinda perfect since he lives there too} (hip hip) jorge! retired in 2011. he had a rocking career, and he still rocks.
i mean, this picture, is like my fave because he is so cheery. :D {i mean who wouldn't be? it's when captain reached a milestone??!}
so, as the 2013 season came to a close, i felt as everything crumbled. no mo next year, no andy, no jorge, all those mean injuries, stupid red sox won the world series, what am i going to do now?
well good news :) we got some new {awesome} players. brian mccann {from the atlanta braves}, jacoby ellsbury {all hail mighty ex red sox turned yankee players}, carlos beltran {from the st. louis cardinals}, and mashashiro tanaka {japanese pitching ace}. and with every good news, there is bad news. :( we lost robinson cano, curtis granderson, multiple others, and of course, alex rodriguez is now serving his year long suspension from ped use. {quite funny, actually. texas rangers fans tell me “a-roid” the most and yet, wasn't he on your team too?}
so spring training is starting in two days, and i cannot wait for the season to start. we have all those great people, i am going to see them in houston opening day, i got a new yankees shirt, it's going to rock, right?! absolutely! except for the news today.
as i was just getting back to school, i was on facebook and i saw a link that said “the captain has something to say”, well i laughed because i thought it was about something completely doofus-y. i clicked on it and it was a big, long status announcing that the derek jeter is going to retire at the end of the season. i started tearing up; and it felt like a heartbreak, honestly. as i sat down and reflected about it in creative writing, i feel like it is a metaphor. since they are letting go of their yankee lives, i am just about to begin mine as a sports reporter. so, i am really sad, however, i believe it is symbolic.
so here we go again!! another farewell tour! oh captain, my captain, i love you alot. :)
{and since buzzfeed puts memories together better than i can}
